Koalas under threat

Australia’s koala populations face a multitude of challenges including habitat loss, climate change, human-induced threats and diseases such as chlamydia and koala retrovirus.

Cleland Wildlife Park works with the University of Adelaide’s School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences to test for infectious diseases and genetic changes in koalas, and have supported students in their research into oxalate nephrosis (kidney disease) in southern koalas.

In addition to our ambassador koalas that you can see daily in our Koala Loft, Cleland is home to a colony of disease free and genetically diverse koalas, which are part of a country wide species management plan overseen by the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia (ZAA).

Can I catch a glimpse of these joeys?

As the joeys play an important role this breeding program and are still developing, they are not available for public viewing.
